What Is the Difference?
Surely one of mankind’s age-old questions is what is the difference between an acrylic cocktail table and an acrylic coffee table? The short answer: there isn’t one. The actual answer: it’s slightly complicated.
The coffee table came to us during the Victorian era when people wanted a small, circular table by their sofa, desk, or chair to place their coffee, books, and other trinkets. This side table was likely a bit taller than its current descendants. It was an essential piece of any well-furnished living space.
The cocktail table, however, came to us during the 1920s, more popularly known as the Roaring ’20s. Despite the efforts (and laws) of Prohibition, drinking, lounging, and, well, cocktail parties were a huge commonplace during this time. And naturally, the small side table took a new form, this time as the cocktail table: a low, rectangular or square table used to serve cocktails and place books, ashtrays, and other trinkets while sitting around the living space and enjoying drinks.
There you have it: the coffee table is a low, round table, and the cocktail table is a low, rectangular table. Today, we are well past both the Victorian era and the Roaring ‘20s, and so our side tables—whether we label them coffee or cocktail—have evolved to take on a similar function in the living room.
