The Smaller Scratches

It’s easy to remove fine scratches from acrylic furniture with the right product and proper cloth. Choose a mildly abrasive polish specifically designed to repair hairline scratches on acrylic surfaces. Carefully read the product label; some acrylic polishes are available in a variety of abrasive strengths suited for different levels of scratches. Use a soft, lint-free cotton cloth to rub the polish over the fine scratches gently. Avoid rayon or polyester cloths because they can add more scratch marks to unprotected acrylic surfaces.

What About The Deep Ones? Advice From Acrylic Furniture Manufacturers

If you can feel the scratch on your acrylic furniture with a fingernail, it requires a little more work and time than a hairline scratch to remove. Sand the scratch with a piece of dry silicon-carbide 600-grit sandpaper, rubbing the area in a circular motion. A damp piece of sandpaper rubbed over the scratch in a circular movement wipes away remnants. Use a finer silicon-carbide sandpaper to polish the area. An automobile rubbing compound that typically is used to prepare a car for a new paint job, followed by a polishing agent such as car wax, restores the initial luster to the acrylic piece.

For an acrylic piece with an overall hazy appearance that can result from numerous fine scratches, use an electric buffer. A buffing kit comes with all of the necessary buffing pads and wool applicator to attach to a standard 3/8-inch household drill. Use the electric buffer along with an appropriate abrasive scratch-remover product to clear away the haze.

More Helpful Tips!

Avoid cleaning agents that contain ammonia, as they can create a hazy look instead of improving the appearance of an acrylic piece. Read the manufacturer’s labels, and use only products specifically formulated for safe use on acrylic. If you want to remove accumulated dust on a piece safely, resist the urge to quickly wipe off the dust with a dry cloth, as this only embeds the dirt and dust to create more scratches. Use a clean cloth dampened with clear water to wipe down the acrylic piece to avoid blemishing the surface.
